The Raymarine STNG Backbone (blue\/black) cable, as the name suggests, is the \u201cspine\u201d cable. The Backbone cable runs from the beginning to the end of the boat's STNG network. It is sensible to construct the network using cables of various lengths so that you can make breaks and add T-connectors or 5-Way connectors where different STNG instruments need to be added.
